Get Started

Installation

Download and install Segra on Windows 10 or newer. Alpha Linux (x86_64) support is also available as a Flatpak.

Segra is available for Windows 10 (build 19041 / 20H1) and newer. An alpha Linux (x86_64) Flatpak is also published for each release. Follow the steps below for your platform.

Windows

Get the installer

Download Segra-win-Setup.exe from the latest release on GitHub.

Segra releases are code-signed by SignPath.io and certified by SignPath Foundation for your security.

Run the setup

Double-click the downloaded Segra-win-Setup.exe file to launch the installer.

Windows SmartScreen may show a warning for new releases. This is normal for newly signed applications. Click "More info" and then "Run anyway" to proceed.

Complete installation

Follow the installation wizard prompts. Segra will be installed to your system and a desktop shortcut will be created.

The installer also installs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) if they're missing. OBS needs the Visual C++ runtime to load on a fresh Windows install.

Linux (alpha)

Linux support is in early alpha. It might not start at all, and features that work on Windows can be missing or broken. Please do not open GitHub issues for Linux problems yet.

Segra ships a Flatpak on each GitHub release. In-app self-update is disabled on Linux — updates are delivered through your package manager.

Flatpak

Download Segra.flatpak from the latest release and install it with flatpak:

flatpak install Segra.flatpak

Launch Segra from your desktop environment's app launcher, or with:

flatpak run tv.segra.Segra

System Requirements

Before installing, ensure your system meets these requirements:

Segra uses GPU hardware encoding (NVENC/AMD AMF/Intel QSV) by default for optimal performance. CPU encoding (x264) is also available.

First Launch

After installation:

  1. Launch Segra from the desktop shortcut or Start menu
  2. Initial Setup: On Windows, Segra downloads the required OBS components on first launch. The Linux Flatpak uses its bundled or system OBS runtime and doesn't download one
  3. Configure Settings: Set up your preferred recording directory, video quality, and hotkeys

Configure Settings

Customize recording quality, hotkeys, and storage paths

Default Configuration

Segra comes with sensible defaults:

  • Recording Directory: %USERPROFILE%\Videos\Segra
  • Cache Directory: %APPDATA%\Segra
  • Resolution: Auto-detected based on your primary monitor (1080p/1440p/4K)
  • Frame Rate: 60 FPS
  • Encoder: GPU (NVENC/AMD AMF/Intel QSV)
  • Recording Mode: Hybrid (session + replay buffer)
  • Replay Buffer Duration: 30 seconds
  • Hotkeys:
    • F8: Create bookmark
    • F9: Toggle recording
    • F10: Save replay buffer
    • F11: Toggle preview

Uninstallation

Windows

Open Windows Settings

Press Win + I to open Windows Settings

Navigate to Apps

Go to Apps → Installed apps

Uninstall Segra

Search for Segra, click the three dots, and select Uninstall

Linux

Run flatpak uninstall tv.segra.Segra.

Uninstalling Segra does not automatically delete your recordings. Your video files in the recording directory will remain intact.

Updating Segra

On Windows, Segra automatically checks for updates and will notify you when a new version is available. When Install updates automatically is enabled (Settings > Advanced > Updates, on by default), Segra installs downloaded updates on its own once nothing is recording and the main window is closed. Updates preserve your settings and recordings. Uncheck the setting to keep the manual "Install now" flow instead.

If the version you're running is no longer published on GitHub (for example, a release that was pulled), the updater moves you to the latest published release, even if its version number is lower. If you're on the Stable channel but running a beta, Segra doesn't downgrade you.

On Linux, in-app self-update is disabled; updates arrive through your Flatpak package manager (for example flatpak update tv.segra.Segra).

Beta Updates

To receive beta updates on Windows:

  1. Open Segra Settings
  2. Navigate to Advanced > Updates
  3. Set Update Channel to Beta

Beta versions may contain experimental features and bugs. Only enable this if you want to help test new functionality.

Troubleshooting

OBS Components Not Downloading

If OBS components fail to download:

  1. Check your internet connection
  2. Ensure Windows Firewall isn't blocking Segra
  3. Try restarting Segra

Performance Issues

For optimal performance:

  • Use GPU encoding (Settings → Video → Encoder → GPU)
  • Lower resolution if needed (Settings → Video → Resolution)
  • Close unnecessary background applications
  • Ensure your GPU drivers are up to date

Storage Warnings

Segra monitors disk space and will warn you when approaching storage limits. You can:

  • Increase the storage limit in Settings
  • Delete old recordings
  • Change the recording directory to a drive with more space
